Stem Cells and their Application in Regenerative Medicine
Stem cells are clonogenic, self-renewing progenitor cells which can differentiate into one or more specialized cell types. Embryonic stem cells have neoplastic potential but their use is controversial and surrounded by legal and ethical issues. Bone marrow and dental tissues are an appealing source for cell based regenerative therapies because of their immunomodulatory properties and in-vitro high expansion potential.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) arise from neural crest or mesoderm and are capable of self-renewal and multipotential differentiation ability. Human gingival tissue has been reported to be a better source of MSCs than bone marrow as they are easy to isolate, homogenous, proliferate faster than bone marrow MSCs, display stable morphology as well as MSC characteristics at high passages, contain normal karyotype and telomerase activity in long term culture. Moreover, gingival MSCs (GMSCs) have also been found to exhibit multi-differentiation into osteoblasts, adipocytes, chondrocytes and neural cells without any tumorigenic effect. But the in-vivo regenerative potential of GMSCs needs elaborate research in terms of their therapeutic potential. This further enunciates the significance of biomaterial scaffolds and 3D culture systems. Our group is currently focusing on studying the synergistic role of GMSCs and scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications.
Presented By Dr. Geetanjali Tomar, a Stem Cell biologist and TEDx speaker, who is presently working as an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB) of renowned Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune), India. She has earned her Doctorate from National centre for cell Science, Pune, India and has been awarded prestigious ‘DST Inspire Faculty’ Fellowship from Government of India. Her research interest is in the stem cell biology and biomaterial development for tissue engineering applications in regenerative medicine.
