Cell culture is a crucial process in biomedical and clinical research therapeutics in the domain of drug discovery, cancer research, regenerative medicine and personalized medicine. Most cell cultures utilize 2D monolayer methods for culturing but advanced new 3D culture methods have been compelling researchers to turn towards this new and improved research model due to their enhanced efficacy and potential to provide close-to-native cell environment in culture systems. In 3D cell culture experiments, the system can be manipulated to mimic in vivo extracellular environment and thus better data on cell-cell interaction, tumor characteristics, biochemical profiling, and disease mechanisms can be extracted. Several 3D cell culture models utilizing hydrogel-based support, polymer-based scaffold, and organoids have been put to use in several biomedical research domains and these systems are expected to eventually bridge the gap between 2D and animal experiment models.

Presented by Prof P K Suresh, an academician and researcher with vast experience for almost 20 years in the field of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Presently he is working as a Professor in the School of Biosciences and Technology, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore . He mentored several doctoral and post graduate students. With many Govt. funded projects to his credential, he has also received a SERB Travel Fellowship (2014 -chaired a session at Beijing) and is currently involved in a drug delivery project (PI on an SERB project). His present research area is in the cell culture and drug delivery-related aspects and their clinical with special emphasis on drug development model.
