Modernising Biomedical Research and Regulatory Testing

The use of animals for trying to understand human disease or to predict human responses to chemical exposure has long been the dominant paradigm in biomedical research and regulatory testing. However, the lack of reproducibility of animal tests and the failure of data obtained from them to be applicable to humans have been serious concerns in the scientific community. Advances in research technology and regulatory testing are revolutionising research and science policy globally with a transition towards human biology–based methods. A growing scientific consensus maintains that far more is to be gained from research and testing using human cells and based on human mechanisms of disease than from tests on other species. This presentation will discuss the legal and scientific rationales for the use of non-animal methods in biomedical research and regulatory testing.

This webinar is presented by Dr Dipti Malhotra Kapoor. Dr Dipti has her doctorate in medical biochemistry from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi. Her doctorate thesis was on the identification of molecular markers for suicidal behaviour associated with unipolar depression. Professionally she has been a fellow of the directorate of forensic sciences under the ministry of home affairs, a visiting faculty at the National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Sciences, under the ministry of home affairs. She is currently working with PETA India as a science policy adviser. She is one of the founding members of the ‘society for alternatives to animal experiments-India’; a life member of Indian Immunology Society. She is a member of the expert committee of the Bureau of Indian Standards. She is an active member of several expert committees under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India as an expert in non-animal methods and global trends and harmonisation.
